Yemen | Statement by Mr. Mohammed Al-Shehari front of the 46th session of the Human Rights Council

Statement by Mr . Mohammed Al-Shehari front of the 46th session of the Human Rights Council.

Mr president ,
Sanaa International Airport has been closed due to the flight ban imposed by the coalition countries led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates with US, British, Israeli and Western support since August 2016, which has led to unbearable difficulties that millions of Yemeni civilians endure at home and abroad. For Yemenis living in Yemen, the closure has caused severe pain and suffering to patients who need medical treatment abroad, either because treatment is not available in Yemen or because treatment is no longer available due to the destruction of the health care sector through attacks on hospitals and the blockade imposed on food and medicine. Local statistics claim that more than 30,000 Yemeni patients needing medical treatment abroad have died and that another 200,000 civilians are suffering and awaiting a similar fate.

Sanaa International Airport serves more than 20 million Yemenis living in Yemen and other millions of Yemenis residing abroad. Its continued illegal closure contributes greatly to the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding before our eyes.

We are surprised by your esteemed council that this issue has not been given importance due to its clear violation of the laws of the Human Rights Council and international laws, which is a dangerous precedent in the history of peoples for an entire peoplation to be deprived of a civilian airport since four years to the present day.
The closure of Sana’a airport has caused the world’s worst humanitarian crisis since World War II and the only result that has been achieved is mass civilian suffering and further regional instability.

For the above-mentioned reasons, we call on you with member states to work immediately to lift the flight ban to and from Sanaa International Airport and to bring the coalition countries led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE to international trial.
